NEW YORK — Baseball is expanding All-Star rosters yet again.
Each league will have 33 players for the July 14 game at St. Louis, with an extra pitcher added to bring the total to 13. The commissioner’s office said Wednesday the extra spot will be a manager’s choice.
There are eight fan-elected starters, eight player-elected pitchers and eight player-elected reserves, with eight players selected by each manager. In addition, a fan Internet vote is held for the final spot in each league.
Rosters were expanded from 30 to 32 after 2002’s 7-7, 11-inning tie in Milwaukee, when both leagues ran out of pitchers. In last year’s 4-3, 15-inning AL victory at Yankee Stadium, every player was used other than San Francisco pitcher Tim Lincecum, who was ill.

I think after that tie in 2002, baseball (namely, Bug Selig,) just got paranoid. And last year’s extra inning affair probably had him wet on his pants. So now he just keeps adding players to the roster, pretty soon it will be harder not to make it to the All-Star game than making it.
Jarrett: No pitcher can go 7 innings in an All-Star game. There are rules against it. The most you can pitch in an All-Star game is 3 innings, and I think no one has done it in the last 20 years.
Thanks for all the answers, though nearly all of you seemed to have missed my point.
To play in the All-Star game, in many ways like a mini-version of the Hall of Fame, should be an honor you really have to earn. It’s shouldn’t be “Oh, well this guy is having a decent year so let’s recognize him as an All-Star” type of event. Furthermore, it is a stage to honor those who have done an outstanding job at his position, not a mean to determine which league is stronger. People should go based on who deserve it the most, not who give me the best chance of beating the other guys.
To expand the roster to almost 4 times the players needed on the field just so to prevent a certain outcome from happening is having your priority backwards.
